Fireside 02:43
I’m gonna pour myself a whiskey And sit by the fireside I’m gonna stare until The embers light up my eyes I’m gonna think about you nonstop And wish you were by my side I’m gonna dance around The feeling of the fire tonight Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh now honey Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh now honey of mine In the morning I see sunlight Beaming through the fir trees high I’m gonna keep on staring ’Til the sun fills up my eyes I’m talking to the river And I’m walking by myself My mind is wondering around My feet are just trying to help Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh now honey Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh now honey of mine When the evening falls I wonder If the night time will be alright I’m gonna light that fire And keep you to myself tonight Yeah I’m gonna stare into the embers And sip a little whiskey tonight

Back to Work 03:04
I stay up late So I can work But for a dog There’s no sound Now and then An owl screeches My work is done I’m all alone But I can’t sleep It’s pretty dark Look at the map I think we’re lost We’re not coming back Let’s turn around If we don’t stop We might not get back We’re not done But I can’t sleep It’s pretty dark Look at the map I think we’re lost We’re not coming back Let’s turn around If we don’t stop We might not get back We’re not done But I can’t sleep

Easy on the Jake brake Honey don’t slow down I couldn’t stop if I wanted ’Till this road levels out Easy on the Jake brake That’s not my style Well I’ve been driving this rig For two thousand miles Well I was scooting up the hill On my way to Humboldt County Then I crested the peak And I headed right down it Well I was going pretty good When I came to Lake County I had to do a double take For a sign when I found it Easy on the Jake brake That’s what the sign said I guess this engine break Is inside of the head Easy on the Jake brake Let ’er roll right along I don’t need a jack hammer I’m busy singing my song I’ve seen an ant eater, barn door, Aligator radio, bobtail, beer bait, Chicken lights, cornflake Easy on the Jake brake Never gonna get it straight, whoa Well I was haulin’ a load Of tomatillos from Yolo County A little kiss on the cheak Cup of coffee then highway twenty Well I was flipping a tape Of Red Simpson over when I looked up I had to do a double take When I saw the sign they had cooked up Easy on the Jake brake Honey don’t slow down I couldn’t stop if I wanted ’Till this road levels out Easy on the Jake brake That’s not my style Well I’ve been driving this rig For two thousand miles I’ve seen an ant eater, barn door, Aligator radio, bobtail, beer bait, Chicken lights, cornflake Easy on the Jake brake Never gonna get it straight, whoa

Daddy asked me knocked on my door He said I’ve got a baby that won’t sit still Daddy asked me knocked on my floor I’ve got a baby that’s feeling ill Daddy said son gonna make my day Daddy said son gonna make you stay If you don’t cry then I’ll be safe If you don’t cry I’ll make my pay Hold still Don’t look at me Hush little baby I’m not your mom Hold still Don’t look at me Hush little baby I’m not your mom Fear is in my face I’ve got a fear I can’t disguise The nail on the bed it hides my lies The veil on my head it hides my eyes Hold still Don’t look at me Hush little baby I’m not your mom Hold still Don’t look at me Hush little baby I’m not your mom Daddy said this one ought to be good Daddy said this one better be good Hold still Don’t look at me Hush little baby I’m not your mom Hold still Don’t look at me Hush little baby I’m not your mom

Cody Riggs 06:52
Cody Riggs was a summer helper But he moved grain like a trooper Justin Oser was Cody’s buddy They both worked on the elevator Cody’s mom said you’re damn fool crazy You know that bin is a widow maker Cody Said it was just one summer Next year I’ll get something better I don’t want to make you cry But mom I gotta try I ain’t old enough to drive That combine riding high When the bin is full it’s pretty simple The work gets done by the grain conveyer But when the auger jams you can’t just stare Sometimes you gotta send someone in there Well it was almost noon and they were almost done All the others wen to lunch Cody said I’m going in there Justin said I’m ging with you They were waking down the corn They turned off the PTO But unless you lock it out No one else will know The machine was off when the boss came back And he wondered why it wasn’t running So he turrned it on and it was loud as hell That’s why no one heard ’em yell A wall of corn began to slide It was eight feet deep and fourty wide Justin managed to stay above it But Cody fell before he knew it They were waking down the corn They turned off the PTO But unless you lock it out No one else will know Well Justin tried but he couldn’t free him Cody’s head was almost covered Justin managed to clear an airway But even he was going under The boss looked in but he couldn’t see them And he hoped to hell they got out somehow It took six men and thirty minutes For Cody Riggs that was just too late And I don’t want to make you cry But mom I gotta try I ain’t old enough to drive That combine riding high

New Glass 02:53
Well your leaving doesn't suit me It's too much change too fast I prefer we were on a highway And our car to get in a crash Loyalty was your strong suit Holding on can make it last Can't believe you would ditch your brother Maybe one day but not so fast But you faked leaving your father You even fake it in church and mass What’s to say you’re not faking Looking at me through the glass Looking at me through the glass I agree we’re all adults But one of us has got to change I think I’ve learned a lesson Can I see you again When we finally find each other I will meet you at the door Maybe I’m just like my mother She was always wanting more But you faked leaving your father You even fake it in church and mass What’s to say you’re not faking Looking at me through the glass Looking at me through the glass

Swing Era 04:19
Well the swing era is gone And all the spats that sat uppon All the two-toned shoes that danced the floors Now I sit in SCUBA gear While the mistress of the year Speaks in seven different languages She caught me on her skis Just to shoot a little breeze Any day there’s no better Attaché From the Duke of tempreance hall She got an envite to the ball That described she would swim there all the way Oh, oh, oh I’m going swingin’ Oh oh, oh she’s going swimin’ Well the ball it wasn’t cool And the swim it was in a pool Then the chlorine turned her dress from blue to gray As I listened to her speak I could feel my knees go weak And my vision began to blur without a doubt I dropped my SCUBA gear ’Cause the mask it wasn’t clear And my two-tones coulnd’t manage all that spray My tie was far from tight She learned her knots from a shipwright But she told me I should let it all go Oh, oh, oh I’m going swingin’ Oh oh, oh she’s going swimin’

Well the waitress and the widower Packed their Studebaker And set out for the Ruth Lake dam They were waylaid in Bridgeville Against their own will By the likes of the Clementine Clan Now the Clementines were ruthless And they took that waitress Who called herself Evelyn Bode Saddled on horses Up through the far hills To a cabin on Shower’s Pass Road Well the widower was loosing On the river Van Duzen He’d been tied up and left for dead The hot sun was shining And the ropes they were binding And the windower was out of his head Oh lord, he sighed Oh lord, he cried What’s gonna become of me Oh lord, he sighed Oh lord, he cried Is this the end of me Oh lord, he sighed Oh lord, he cried What’s gonna become of me Oh lord, he sighed Oh lord, he cried Is this the end of me Well his strong will persisted And the bindings they untwisted And he managed to get himself free Well he hitchhiked to Dinsmore And rounded up three or four Of the high sheriff and deputies Headed for the hideout The posse had mapped out They thought they knew the Clementine’s plan When they got there they were stunned At what Evelyn had done To the outlaw Clementine clan The Clementines with Evelyn Arrived at the cabin They were cut and tied and barely alive What the Clementines didn’t know Was Evelyn while in tow Was a master of the steel-blade knives Oh lord, they sighed Oh lord, they cried What’s gonna become of us Oh lord, they sighed Oh lord, they cried Is this the end of us Oh lord, they sighed Oh lord, they cried What’s gonna become of us Oh lord, they sighed Oh lord, they cried Is this the end of us

One day I was standing tall And some time I lost it all But I’m gonna shine when I fall I’m gonna shine like a silver ball My hands your skin make a beautiful song My fingers play it when you’re gone Your skin plays along I’ll sing that song until the dawn I’m a stealer and a scavenger The fruit I find, I call it mine And when I leave I leave some behind For the seekers coming down the line Water flows from a waterfall With memories that I recall I know I’ve seen them all They’re gonna shine when they fall Sixty, seventy, eightyfour Panama don’t care no more Daughter then is a mother now A daughter then she’s your mother now I hear her through a magaphone The messages as old as bone Her voice tears through the air Speak your mind, lay it bare You’ve got flare like a millionaire I might say you’ve been unfair But I played the game, I was aware When the winter comes, be prepared The picture in my window screen Shows a place I’ve never seen I searched it all and I found it down I found out it isn’t in my town

You have always believed You’re an expert on what Is an appropriate reaction And what is not You have always believed You’re an expert on how All the voices and the actors Should finally sound That’s your arrogance Which by the way Is the flip-side Of your confidence And confidence Is a good thing But too much confidence Is arrogance You taught me a skillDifficult Difficult to drill Backwards and sideways ’Till it paid the bill New skills are better But they get old All is forgotten Skills they become Your arrogance Which by the way Is the flip-side Of your confidence And confidence Is a good thing But too much confidence Is arrogance

Who Cares 03:46
I used to read reviews And be ammused I paid some dues But who cares I had a fast ride I had pool slide I had a pool But who cares All the people Have moved on But who cares Who cares All the people Have moved on But who cares Who cares Now I make my bed In tool shed My plants are dead But who cares I had a good look I wrote a book I like to cook But who cares I had some cool shoes I had a nice pair Now my feed are bare But who cares All the people Have moved on But who cares Who cares All the people Have moved on But who cares Who cares On bad day I went to L.A. I went the wrong way But who cares

about

Growing weary of the pandemic lockdown of 2020–2021, the Bottom Dwellers decided to resume their weekly rehearsals after receiving their vaccinations. These rehearsals took place outside, and only when the air quality would permit it. Northern California was inundated with smoke from record-setting wildfires during much of this time.

In the fall and winter months, the band huddled around a fire pit (at a respectable social distance) to keep warm while they played. With music venues shut down, there wasn’t much to do but write, so that’s what they did. Fireside is a collection of songs written during this time. It takes its name from both the inferno that engulfed much of their home state, as well as the source of heat that made these rehearsals possible.
